Have you ever walked through Moakley Park and wondered how it stays so beautiful despite the constant use? Well, we have fantastic volunteers who make it all possible through our monthly Moakley Park Clean-Ups. The monthly clean-ups aren’t just about tidying up the park; they’re about uniting the community to maintain the park that we all love for everyone to enjoy.

Moakley Park is one of Boston’s largest waterfront parks, encompassing 60 acres of public walking paths, playgrounds, athletic fields, and open space that serve as an essential resource to the surrounding community. Moakley Park Clean-Ups was started to bring members of these communities together and provide them an opportunity to shape the experience within their local public park spaces. We wanted to encourage people to “Make Moakley Yours” by creating a clean and safe environment for people throughout the community to visit.
We are thrilled to share that this season, Boston Harbor Now in partnership with Boston’s Department of Parks and Recreation had the privilege of hosting 249 dedicated volunteers at Moakley Park clean-ups. These incredible volunteers generously contributed 535 hours of service, working tirelessly to remove over 1200 lbs of trash and natural debris from the park. We gave all of our volunteers a task they were comfortable completing so everyone felt like they could make a difference while participating. Activities included picking up trash, collecting microplastics, raking leaves and branches, clearing garden beds, and planting bulbs.

Many community volunteers’ hard work and commitment, especially from our dedicated community partner Boston Cares, have significantly improved Moakley Park’s accessibility and natural beauty, transforming the park into a more welcoming and safe space for all to enjoy.
We look forward to organizing even more fantastic events in the Park to connect community members with their park and each other. Stay tuned for a slate of seasonal events this winter including Merry Moakley on December 12th and the Winter Warmer on February 8th and the start of next season’s Moakley Park Clean-ups beginning in April 2025. We’ll see you in the park!
